Finan increase in the value of a currency in relation to others. In situations where there is a floating exchange rate, a currency will normally find its own level automatically but this will not happen if there is a fixed exchange rate. Should a government have persistent balance of payment surpluses, it may exceptionally decide to revalue its currency, making imports cheaper but its exports more expensive. -

Падение стоимости валюты относительно стоимости золота или других валют. Правительства проводят девальвацию в тех случаях, когда они понимают, что курс их валюты оказался завышенным-например, если становится очевидным, что из-за высоких темпов инфляции экспортная продукция страны утратила конкурентоспособность либо торговый баланс (balance of trade) весьма неблагоприятен для страны. Задача девальвации состоит в том, чтобы сделать экспортные товары более дешевыми, а импортные товары-более дорогими, хотя, несомненно, отрицательным моментом является потеря доверия к стране, вынужденной девальвировать свою валюту. Девальвация-это мера, на которую вынуждены идти только государства с фиксированным обменным курсом (fixed exchange rate) своей валюты. Если валюта страны является “плавающей” (floating exchange rate), девальвации или ревальвации происходят постоянно и автоматически (см.: depreciation (обесценение); revaluation of currency (ревальвация валюты)).
